The Aging Lifter
They say that after 30 you start losing muscle at up to 2% a year… but not us! Those of us in the gym day in and day out, week after week, month after month, and ultimately year after year have proven that statistic wrong. You might have not even realized that, but you continue to make improvements and stay younger just by lifting weights. Strength training keeps you alive, sharp, strong, and stable, as well as:
Fights off insulin resistance
Protects your bones
Keeps you from getting weak or foggy with age
Helps calm inflammation
Skip strength training and you’re basically speeding up aging. If you don’t eat enough protein your body becomes softer, slower, and less resilient. So, if you want to feel strong, stay independent, move well, and keep your brain switched on, then muscle is non-negotiable.
The fact is, people start to lose muscle after 30 and especially after retirement is because they move less, exercise less, lift weights less, and just in general become less active in their life. To avoid any of this, make the gym – or whatever you like for physical fitness – a nonnegotiable habit starting now.
